How to Make Laptop Skins
Posted on July 24th, 2008 by Mark under Laptop skins, custom skinsThis is a starter guide to teach you how to makelaptop skins, which can also be applied to making cellphone skins, iPod skins, or just about anything you want to skin. You’ll want to start by opening your favorite graphics program. It could be Photoshop or something else.
If you don’t have a graphics program, you can get a free copy of Gimp which should do the trick.
When starting a new project in your graphics program, be sure to select RGB mode, otherwise it will probably be grayscale. Also choose a resolution of 300 so your graphic will be of print quality. Lower than 300 might produce disappointing results, above it is unecessary.
Update: 200 dpi is enough resolution for good results

For the size, you will want to work with something fairly large. You can easily scale your image down, but if you try to increase the size, that’s when things become “pixelated”, or distorted and blurry. Let’s start with 2500 width and 3000 height, with the resolution 200 dpi (dots per inch) and RGB color mode.
The next part, the design, is really up to you. If you are using photoshop, you might find “brushes” to be a cool way to help and inspire. Just do a search for “photoshop brushes” if interested. A couple sites for favorite brush sets are here, here, and here. If wondering what to do with them, search for “install photoshop brushes” for additional help. When you’ve completed your design, you would choose from the File menu to “save as” and select jpeg, with quality set to maximum.
A website that might also inspire you is deviantart which has lots of work by other graphic designers to look at. There are so many great sites to provide additional help all you need to do is search “photoshop tutorials”. One of the most popular is the PS roadmap. As a rule of thumb, your final image (jpeg) for a skin should be close to 1 MB or more, or it might be a little grainy/blurry. You can probably get use 500 kb or more for cellphones, but not less.
It’s now up to you. You’re the designer. Having an idea of what you hope to acheive will make a huge difference. Whether you’re looking to create a design in a hip hop, skater, or another style, it’s up to you.

Hi
Need help here. I am interested in this laptop skin. However, would like to print it on my own. Do you have any idea what the skin is made of? And would a normal printer, be able to print on the skin (so as to design my own image)?
So, do i need a cutting plotter in the end too?
Thanks. Much appreciated for your soonest reply.

Hi Jimmy
Laptop skins use special vinyl, as well as a specialized pringing and manufacturing processwhich make them very durable and last a long time. They can not be printed on a consumer printer. Also, after the printing, the laptop skin is also treated with a coating to help the skin last longer.
Each laptop skin is precision cut to the model you select. All you need to do is create or choose a design, and your laptop model.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the reply. I was eager to try out a small business out of this. But seems like a tedious process from printing to selling.
Think i better find another way. Or is there?
thankS!

Hi Dominic
If you want a specific skin, you might scan an image you like and follow the above suggestion to make it work for you.
Most skins are either downloaded, scanned, or designed.
We don’t have a gallery just yet.
And we couldn’t sell a pussycat dolls skin for various legal reasons, but you can scan and make your own! Hope that helps.

hey just wanted to know can you take an image from the website of, say for an example a pic of Diddy and make it into a skin and sell it on ebay? or isit not allowed due to legal reasons??

You can take a pic of a celebrity and make a skin for your own use, but I do not think you can do that to make a profit. I think there is licensing required, but you would want to check with your own legal counsel as this is just my guess and I am not properly qualified to answer legal matters.

After you make your design just click the big yellow graphic above that says “skin your gadgets”. The printers we use are special order and over $10k. We also use special paper which we also coat afterwards. You can’t get the required quality at home for cheap. It will smudge without the protective coating and the special paper is only available in large quantities. If you’re still convinced that doing it at home is the way to go try visiting an office supply store for large stickers to print.
I understand if it sounds biased, but the truth is the quality of a home print job doesn’t even compare.

You would need a scanner only if you planned to scan images that you want to use as skins.
