Tips for Finding Images for Skins

Posted by Mark in Cell Phone Skins, Laptop skins, Xbox Skins, custom skins, ipod skins, macbook skins

Ever thought about looking online for skins for laptops or another device? Here’s a couple tips to help get you started;

Visit a page like Google Images and look for the image you were thinking to use for a skin.

Change the results to show “Extra Large” and look for images 1,000 Kb (which is 1 MB) or larger. You can find so many images for skins this way.

Remember:

Larger devices like laptops, netbooks, xbox, playstation or Wii should use images 1 MB or larger in file size.

Devices closer to size of a cell phone, PSP, ipod, MP3 player, Nintendo DS Lite, or similar size can use images that are 500 Kb or larger.

Use images with less than recommend file size would probably produce skins that could be disappointing due to unclear or pixelated images.

How to Make Your Own Cell Phone Skin

Posted by Mark in Cell Phone Skins

If you’re looking to customize your cell phone with a skin, you’ll want to start off right. The following instructions are a general guide to help you make your own cell phone skins.

First, you will need a graphics program. We’ll assume you have Photoshop as it is the most common. Next, you should figure out the approximate dimensions of your cell phone. Good places to check for specifications like this would be electronic retail websites such as BestBuy or even Amazon.

Using the Motorola Razr V3 as an example, it was easy to find the dimensions on the Bestbuy website. The Razr measures about 3.9 x 2.1 inches.

Keep in mind there are 4 surface areas, but for the sake of this example we will discuss how to make your own cell phone skin for the exterior of the phone.

Open up photoshop, and when creating a new doc you should set the dpi to 200, and for each inch use 200 pixels. So, we’ll say 3.9 is 4, and multiply that by 200 for height of pixels, which gives us 800 height. And for width, we’ll round the 2.1 up to 2.5 and multiply by 200, which gives us 500. That means our design working area is 800 height  by 500 width, at 200 dpi. Hope this makes sense so far.

Now you either select an image or pattern you want to use, or get busy designing one. Note that your finished output should be a non-progressive jpeg that is at least 400 KB for reasonable quality. A good source of images and ideas to check would be desktop wallpaper websites.

You are unique, just like everyone else. I thought that was kind of funny, yet so true.

Henry Ford once said “You can have any color you want, as long as it’s black.” We’ve come a long way since then. Now you can customize your car. Why not do the same with your gadgets?

Laptops, cellphones, or just about any device. Personalized to your tastes and to suit you.

Design an image you like in your favorite graphics program, or use a photo from your digital camera. You can also choose from lots of cool pics in their online gallery.

If want to design your own image and don’t have like photoshop or another graphics program, you can try a search for GIMP which is free.

This is kind of cool - if you’re looking for a clear skin to protect your laptop, ipods cellphone or other devices from scratches, you may be interested in products from Invisible Shield. It takes scratch proof to a new level. The clear material was developed by the military, and this is strong stuff. Just watch the video and judge for yourself.

Custom skins for cellphones, laptops, iPods and game consoles are cool because they let you use your own graphics or photos. So far I’ve put skins on my cellphone, Xbox360, and next is my laptop.

You can put a skin of your favorite band, celebrity, or just about anything.

Cellphone Skins and Faceplates

Posted by Mark in Cell Phone Skins

Someone was asking me what the difference is between a cellphone skin and a faceplate. The best way to describe it is a cellphone skin is like a sticker, while a faceplate is like a snap on cover.

So which one is better? I think cellphone skins are better than faceplates for a few reasons;

  • Cellphone skins are reusable and don’t scratch your phone like covers do when you put them on and take them off a few times
  • Cellphone skins don’t make your phone thicker (maybe a hair!) so you can use a case if you want. Not with a cover!
  • You can customize your own cellphone skins! This is the best reason of all!
